If you are ever making a phone call from your cellphone and believe no one else is listening. Think again.
Physorg.com is reporting that researchers in Germany are working on cracking the encryption on GSM phone calls. Why you might ask? To help and highlight the vulnerability of the GSM system, as well as, encourage providers of GSM networks to upgrade their networks to 3G which offer better encryption for phone calls.
Now none of this news is new. A few months ago, I remember hearing about this same effort from the Security Now Podcast over on the TWIT network. In the podcast, Steve Gibson went into the various issues surrounding the security of GSM phone calls and how the security of phone calls made by GSM phones has declined over the years do to the advancement of technology. GSM is an older standard and its security model at the time was very good, but it just hasn't aged well.
